Description

Delicious Mexican chicken tamales made with masa dough and seasoned shredded chicken, wrapped in corn husks and steamed to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups masa harina
  • 2 cups warm water or chicken broth
  • 1 cup lard or vegetable shortening
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 cups shredded chicken
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • Corn husks (for wrapping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the corn husks by soaking them in warm water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Mix masa harina with warm water or broth, lard, salt, and baking powder until smooth.
  3. Shred cooked chicken and season with cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, and oregano.
  4. Spread 2-3 tablespoons of masa on the center of a corn husk.
  5. Add a spoonful of chicken filling in the center of the masa.
  6. Fold the corn husk over the masa and filling, then fold the pointed end up to enclose the tamale.
  7. Steam for 1 to 1.5 hours, ensuring the masa pulls away from the husk when done.

Notes

Using banana leaves or parchment paper is a great alternative for wrapping if corn husks are unavailable. Customize spices according to your taste for a personalized flavor.
