  • ¼ cup heavy cream (add more if needed)
  • 1 tsp vanilla (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease two 8-inch cake pans.
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add the milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla and mix until smooth.
  4. Pour in the hot water or coffee, and mix until the batter is thin.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes.
  6. Cool the cakes in their pans before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. Beat the butter until light and fluffy, then add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, vanilla, and salt to make the frosting.
  8. Assemble the cake by frosting between layers and on the top and sides of the cake.
