Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups whole milk (for custard)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
- 3 egg yolks (for custard)
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon butter (for custard)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for custard)
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar (for strawberries)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped cream)
- Fresh strawberries (optional garnish)
- White chocolate shavings (optional garnish)
- Strawberry syrup drizzle (optional garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, and stir in the vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let it cool completely.
- Heat the milk over medium heat until steaming. In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch. Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla. Allow the custard to cool slightly before spreading it over the cake.
- Combine the sliced strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice in a bowl. Let this mixture sit for 10–15 minutes to enhance the flavor.
- Spread the cooled custard over the cake layer, then top it with the prepared strawberries.
- In a chilled bowl, beat the heavy cream until thick. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla, and whip until you achieve soft peaks. Spread the whipped cream over the strawberry layer.
- Refrigerate the assembled dessert for at least 120 minutes before serving.
Notes
Use fresh strawberries for the best flavor and texture. Chill your mixing bowl before whipping the cream for fluffiness.
