Description
A warm, gooey dessert that transforms a simple chocolate batter into a luscious chocolate hot fudge sauce underneath a tender cake layer.
Ingredients
Scale
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1 ½ cups granulated white sugar
- 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process preferred)
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 cup whole milk, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups granulated white sugar (for topping)
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for topping)
- 3 cups boiling water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F).
- Place the butter into the 9×13-inch baking dish and melt it in the oven for 3–5 minutes. Set aside.
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a medium mixing bowl.
- Pour in the milk and vanilla extract, and stir gently to combine.
- Pour the thick chocolate batter over the melted butter in the baking dish without stirring.
- Mix the sugar and cocoa powder for the topping and sprinkle it over the batter.
- Slowly pour the boiling water over the top of the cocoa mixture using a spoon.
- Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the cake layer has risen and is set, with bubbling sauce underneath.
- Rest the cobbler for 10 minutes before serving with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
Do not stir the layers together for the best results. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated with a splash of milk.
