Description

A comforting South Indian dish featuring rice, lentils, vegetables, and a flavorful spice blend.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup short-grain rice
  • 1/2 cup Toor dal (yellow lentils)
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas, potatoes)
  • 1/4 cup tamarind extract
  • 2 tbsp Pure and Sure Bisi Bele Bath spice mix
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp curry leaves
  • 2 dried red chilies

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice and lentils thoroughly under running water and soak them for 30 minutes.
  2. Chop the vegetables into small, uniform pieces.
  3. Soak tamarind in warm water for 10 minutes, then squeeze out the juice.
  4. Combine soaked rice and lentils with water in a large pot and cook until soft and mushy.
  5. Cook the chopped vegetables in a separate pan until tender.
  6. Prepare the spice blend if making your own by dry roasting spices and grinding them into a fine powder.
  7. Mix together the cooked rice, lentils, and vegetables in a pot.
  8. Add the tamarind extract and spice blend, stirring well.
  9. Simmer for a few minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  10. Temper with ghee, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and dried red chilies before serving.

Notes

Serve with crispy papad and cooling raita for a complete meal. Adjust spice levels to taste.
