Homemade German horse muffins that offer a delicious and nutritious treat for your equine friends.


Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups steel-cut oats
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 2/3 cup flaxseed
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 apple
  • 1 bag of peppermints (optional)

Instructions

  1. Process the carrots and apples using a food processor.
  2. Measure the steel-cut oats, flour, flaxseed, and cornstarch accurately.
  3. Grease the muffin tins thoroughly with cooking spray or vegetable oil.
  4. Combine the molasses and oats in a large mixing bowl until the oats are coated.
  5. Add the flour, flaxseed, and cornstarch gradually and mix until well combined.
  6. Incorporate the processed carrot and apple into the mixture and stir evenly.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fill the greased muffin tins with the mixture, about three-quarters full.
  9. Bake the muffins for 15-20 minutes until firm and slightly golden.
  10. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack, pressing a peppermint candy into the center of each muffin while warm.

Notes

Substitutions include pears for carrots and honey or maple syrup for molasses. Consult a veterinarian if introducing new ingredients to your horse’s diet.
