Description

A delightful blend of rich chocolate and zesty orange, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest
  • 1 cup hot brewed coffee
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Orange gel food coloring (optional)
  • 12 oz semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract (optional)
  • 1 fresh orange, thinly sliced
  • Extra orange zest (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease two 8-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla, and orange zest. Mix until smooth and combined.
  4. Pour in the hot coffee while mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin.
  5. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 28–34 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  6. Cool the cakes in their pans for 10 minutes, then turn them onto wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth for the orange cream filling. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in orange juice, orange zest, vanilla, and salt. Optional: mix in orange gel coloring.
  8. Place one chocolate cake layer on a serving plate. Spread the orange cream filling on top, stopping about 1/2 inch from the edge. Add the second layer and press down gently. Chill the assembled cake for 30–45 minutes.
  9. Heat heavy cream until steaming and pour it over the chopped chocolate. Let sit for 3 minutes, then stir until smooth for the chocolate-orange glaze.
  10. Mix in butter, orange zest, optional orange extract, and salt. Let cool until thickened but pourable.
  11. Pour the chocolate-orange glaze over the chilled cake, letting it flow down the sides. Chill for 20–30 minutes.
  12. Decorate with fresh orange slices and extra zest if desired. Serve with fresh orange slices or coffee.

Notes

Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgence.
